CLIFTON 2 by Peerutin Architects in Cape Town, South Africa
The CLIFTON 2 residence is situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Clifton, a prestigious and affluent suburb of Cape Town, renowned for its luxury mansions, many of which are among the most expensive properties in South Africa. Nearby is Clifton Beach, one of the most striking landmarks of South Africa’s legislative capital.
CLIFTON 2 is an example of how, thanks to the open-mindedness and foresight of the clients, banker Lloyd Pengilli and his son Hanno, the architects at Peerutin Architects were able to fully unleash their creative potential and create a unique building that stands in stark contrast to the surrounding development of expensive mansions featuring traditional rationalist architecture. Californian futuristic architecture of the 1960s and 1970s, and in particular the legacy of the renowned architect John Lotner, inspired the South African architects to create an audacious masterpiece; in designing it, they took the landscape’s characteristics into account and managed to integrate the building seamlessly into the undulating slope.
