Vancouver-based Gaile Guevara Studio has remodelled a two-storey house on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. The clients were attracted by the panoramic views and proximity to Auckland, so they decided to extend the existing small building. The redesign included a complete internal refurbishment as well as a new pool house and spa on the hillside. Two new bathrooms were also added to the five-bedroom home, and the master bedroom was relocated to the ground floor so that the upper and lower floors could be used as public and private family areas, respectively.
The new living configuration has made the house more comfortable for the new owners. A cantilevered terrace with panoramic views of Oneroa Bay protrudes from the first floor. The terrace connects the family bedrooms in an interesting combination of privacy and access. The kitchen, expanded by the relocation of the master bedroom, flows into the terrace and large courtyard. This courtyard has lattice ceilings that partially block it in places, allowing residents and guests to relax in the sunshine before taking a swim in the pool.
