A London-based Victorian House Renovated for Young Family

Plissé House is an extension and conversion of a Victorian family home for a young family, situated on a London street lined with Edwardian and Victorian houses. The architects’ main brief was to create spacious, light-filled rooms with a close connection to the long, south-facing garden, whilst maintaining privacy from neighbouring houses.

With a construction budget of approximately £300,000, the main focus was not on increasing the floor area, but on maximising the architectural and functional impact of every square metre. Investment was concentrated on the façade, the glazing, the kitchen, the fitted furniture and the master bedroom.

Plissé House makes the most of its layout and windows to create a cosy atmosphere in its open-plan spaces, combining high-quality, durable materials with warm interiors. The result is a contemporary house that does not overlook its Victorian context; it is comfortable and open, yet does not feel exposed.

Katherine Sumner-Clare (Kate Clare)  studied architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art and completed her Masters at the University of Edinburgh, followed by postgraduate study at Westminster. She later founded LOUD Architects, a design-led East London studio known for sensitive renovations, contemporary extensions and intelligent, cost-aware design.
