Chalet sur la pointe. A dialogue between 2 eras
The "Cottage on the Point" is a project by Paul Bernier Architecte in Quebec that renovated and extended a 40-year-old rustic log cabin by adding a new contemporary upper-level volume clad in dark-stained cedar to the existing structure. The renovation replaced the old roof with a new Douglas fir structure to support the added floor, created an open-plan interior with a restored central stone fireplace, and incorporated a minimalistic staircase and a master bedroom with an observation post overlooking the lake.
Paul Bernier Architecte: "It is the meeting of two eras. The addition is a clean and monolithic volume but whose material and colour echo those of the original cottage."
The interior of the cottage maximizes the contribution of natural light and highlights the colors of the surrounding nature. The old massive stone fireplace has been restored and is now visible on all sides, acting as a bridge between the original chalet and the contemporary addition. The selection of built-ins, furniture and accessories is made by the columnist/blogger and stylist Marie-Christine Sirois.
Guided by notions of "contrast and continuity," the Montreal studio of Paul Bernier Architecte sought to overhaul the single-storey building in a way that respected its rustic aesthetic yet didn't mimic it.
