Los Angeles, California, United States
The house has been designed for art collectors who appreciate contemporary architecture and design. The architecture, based on the concept of ‘contemporary ruins’ or a ‘village’ comprising open and enclosed spaces, was developed by Masastudio, whilst the interiors were designed by Kelly Wearstler.
In the main house, the layout revolves around a central atrium, which features an oval courtyard with a centuries-old olive tree at its centre.
Kelly Wearstler: "We were really working with the color story of the artworks and with the openings to the exterior, so it was all in synchronicity. The sense of exploration and discovery is amazing..." The designer described the atmosphere inside the house as "soulful modern".
Kelly Wearstler: "Looking across through the glass Oculus to the other side, we created more depth by allowing views of really beautiful pieces of art beyond. We made sure that there was a bench or a moment where somebody could just sit and appreciate them..."
PRIVATE EXPOSURE A dining moment in the pool pavilion. Natural light washes over a rich palette of hand-troweled gun smoke plaster, patinated bronze, and wire-brushed oak paired with bluestone. A pewter coffee table by Christopher Gentner, a pressed stool by Floris Wubben, and vintage chairs by Kwok Hoi Chan for Steiner bring sculptural character to the room.
