Dalarö House - US practice Olson Kundig’s first build in Sweden on the rocky coastline of the Stockholm archipelago.

Designed to blend in with the landscape, the home is built around rocks and features exposed natural materials that reference the surrounding stones and pine trees. Dark wood and stone are the main materials of a summer holiday home.

Design principal Tom Kundig, FAIA, RIBA:

“The form is a response to the context of simple vernacular homes, and serves as counterpoint to the beautiful and rugged natural landscape.”

Tom Kundig:

“Because the house was intended for use primarily in the summer, we moved away from the lighter palettes that are traditional to Scandinavian architecture, and instead use darker materials as a refuge from the light”

Tom Kundig:

“Throughout the design process for Dalarö House, we wanted to maintain a sensitivity to this special place and create a home that is quiet and deferential to the context”
