The Bailey Kellogg Residence is situated on a hilltop, on a 40-acre site to the north-east of San Diego, surrounded by an avocado grove planted by the original owners, Dr and Mrs Joseph J. Bailey. Its high perch lends itself to breathtaking 360 degree views of the area through the floor to ceiling windows.

This remarkable house, designed by Kendrick Bangs Kellogg in 1984, is a fine example of organic architecture. It was built using glass, timber and local materials sourced directly from the surrounding area. Construction took six years.

The handcrafted wooden panelling inside the 4,133-square-foot living room lends the space a sense of warmth. Its glossy finish and curved lines create a sense of harmony within the interior and provide a subtle contrast to the natural stone.

The unique fireplace becomes the focal point of the open-plan living areas and cosy nooks that flow seamlessly around it.

 Lot: 16.19 ha / 40 acres    Interior: 384 m² / 4,133 sq ft    Bedrooms: 5    Bathrooms: 4

The master bedroom on the top floor opens onto an open-air terrace, the layout of which echoes the stone base beneath it.

This house, with its two fireplaces, five bedrooms and four bathrooms, embodies the finest aspects of Kendrick Bangs Kellogg’s work, blurring the boundaries between nature and the built environment, between sculpture and architecture.
