This 1930s Spanish Colonial is a masterpiece of architectural history, featuring elements salvaged from a Spanish monastery. With sweeping views stretching to the Pacific Ocean, the home’s striking California-cool aesthetic blends seamlessly with its storied past.

The project’s design solutions highlight the architectural details and preserve the integrity of this house, without conflicting with it. White walls allow the architecture to ‘breathe’. The neutral colour of the walls provides the perfect backdrop for the layered textures and finishes throughout the house. The furnishings are characterised by their simplicity and comfort. The interior is adorned with interesting finds from travels abroad. Elements in Mediterranean shades create a positive atmosphere.

A rare map of Paris was bought in a Parisian antique shop.

Maria Khouri: "This project was love at first sight. Our challenge—and passion—was to preserve the home’s architectural integrity while infusing it with the personality and warmth of its owners. We thoughtfully layered contemporary furnishings with antique elements, honoring its heritage while ensuring a fresh, livable feel. A palette of neutral tones and natural textures highlights the home’s craftsmanship, allowing its rich history to take center stage."

The designer has managed to strike a delicate balance between the Spanish colonial style and a understated, contemporary Californian style.
