The legendary Italian-style townhouse on St. Luke’s Place in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village – which was owned by actor Robert De Niro for three decades – has been refurbished and restored by BarlisWedlick. The house, named Arbor Vitae, is a four-bedroom family home.
The house, built in 1852, has six storeys, including a new penthouse. The BarlisWedlick team chose not to completely rebuild or modernise the building – many of the original historical features were preserved. To determine the optimal colour palette and décor for the house’s interiors, from the basement right up to the restored original skylight, the ‘Tree of Life’ theme was developed.
A large number of traditional features were restored, and the existing staircase connecting all the floors was retained, thereby restoring the building’s integrity. One of the measures taken to modernise the building was the installation of a lift.
The architectural firm BarlisWedlick has succeeded in transforming a townhouse into an energy-efficient passive house, whilst retaining every single one of the 150-year-old features protected by the district’s heritage conservation committee.
